A hob grate is a type of small cast iron fireplace that first came into fashion in the Georgian period. This particular style of fire was integral to the lifestyles of most people living in this era. The fireplace is named a hob grate as the fire has flat castings or "hobs" on either side of the fire, these would have been used to warm water and to cook with. Fireplaces of this type were traditionally built directly into the brickwork of a chimney and then a timber surround would frame the chimney opening.
Most of our hob grate fires come in a variety of finishes, all black or highlight polish. The fire surrounds shown are not included. Our hob grates are capable of burning solid fuels or gas (unless specified) and we can supply a choice of fully certified gas fires with any suitable fireplace.
